Where do you purchase your meat? Many people buy their meat at a grocery store — the same store where they buy their packaged goods, produce, and pantry items. There is nothing wrong with this, per se. However, if you have a local meat market in your town, you may consider buying your meat there instead of at the everyday grocery store.
Here are some benefits of shopping at a fresh meat shopping market.

Many meat markets source many, if not all, of their meats from local farms and smaller local producers. As such, when you buy from a local meat market, you are supporting more small businesses within the community rather than big, national corporations. If you're someone who likes to keep your money in the immediate community, this is a good way to do that. Of course, locally produced meats also tend to have a lower carbon footprint, since less transportation is involved, so buying them is a good move for the planet.
You can ask more questions about the meat.
The people who work at local meat shops tend to know a lot about meat. They are often passionate about cooking and preparing it. So, if you shop at one of these stores, there is always someone you can ask for cooking advice. Ask the butcher what temperature you should cook the roast, or how they recommend seasoning chicken breasts. You can also ask questions about meat storage, the best cuts for various uses, and so forth.
You may be able to buy cuts you don't see elsewhere.
Meat markets tend to have more unique cuts of meat that you may not see in other stores. For instance, you may be able to buy whole pork bellies, airline chicken breasts, and other more specific cuts that grocery stores don't keep in stock. At some meat markets, you can even ask the butcher to make some specific cuts of meat for you. They keep larger pieces of meat on hand so they can cut them to order and satisfy your special requests.
If you have a local meat market in your town, make sure you stop there now and then. Even if you don't buy all of your meat at these stores, they can be a good place to find unique cuts, ask some questions, and keep your money in the local community.
